What is biodiesel?

It's a vegetable oil-based fuel that can run in an unmodified engine - be it a car, bus, truck or boat! The substance can be merged with regular diesel or it can run 100% on its own. The future is biodiesel!

It's also one of the most thoroughly tested alternative fuels on the market. Test have proven that although it performs in a similar fashion to petroleum diesel, biodiesel is far better for the environment.

Minnesota's Biodiesel Mandate

The Minnesota Legislature paved the way for biodiesel in the 2002 session, passing a law that mandates 2% biodiesel be blended into Minnesota diesel fuel beginning in 2005. The "B2 law", as it is called, is the first of its kind in the nation, and it affects most diesel fuel sold in Minnesota. Some industries such as railroads and mining are exempt.

On Tuesday, August 23, 2005 Agriculture Commissioner, Gene Hugoson authorized publication in the August 29th edition of the Minnesota State Register that the state of Minnesota had at least 8 million gallons of biodiesel. Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 239.77 this resulted in the implementation of the state-wide 2% biodiesel fuel use requirement effective September 29, 2005.
